Five troops wounded in twin blasts

Five soldiers were wounded in two bomb explosions in Narathiwat’s Tak Bai district, local officials said.

According to Thai media, the two attacks took place about 30 minutes apart and the second one was believed to target the officers deployed to inspect the first blast.

The first bomb went off at the back of a fisheries research and development office, injuring three soldiers who arrived in a pick-up truck. 

A bomb was planted at a parked motorcycle and detonated when the pickup truck arrived.

Pvt Sirikhet Makkhakhet sustained serious injuries in his right leg while Pvt Thanaphum Khunchamnan was injured in his right cheek. Another soldier Pvt Sitthipong Kharawa had a chest pain and a ringing in his ears.

As authorities were sealing off the area for an inspection, another bomb exploded on a road, about 800 metres from the first scene.

Two other officers, Pol Cpl Kittpong Promsen, of Tak Bai police station, and Pvt Ahmeen Yodnarong were injured. The bomb, weighing about 5-7kg, was detonated by a mobile phone.

Authorities are investigating the attacks.
