Charleston shooting LIVE: Gunman shot and wounded, victim dead

Dozens of police officers are reportedly rushing to Charleston district of South Carolina, United States after police reported a possible “active shooter situation”. As per The Associated Press, Charleston Police sent SWAT teams and a bomb disposal unit to the area to investigate. People have been instructed to stay inside and those outside have been told to vacate the area. The shooting reportedly took place around 12.15 pm (local time) in King Street area.

Here are the live updates:

1.00 am: Interim Charleston Police Chief Jerome Taylor said all the hostages at the restaurant  have been rescued safely. Mayor John Tecklenburg said the gunman is in critical condition. Authorities have not released the name of either the gunman or the victim.

12.50 am: Mayor John Tecklenburg has said the gunman has been shot by the police and is wounded. The employee who was shot by the gunman has died. Mayor said the hostage situation in Charleston has ended, AP reported.

12.30 am: The owner of the restaurant where the shooter is holding hostages informed that the shooter is a dishwasher. As per AP reports, John Aquino, the owner, said the victim is a male chef of the restaurant.

12.20 am: As per Charleston City Paper’s Twitter handle, Mayor John Tecklenburg has said the situation involves “several” hostages, as compared to earlier reports by the police stating the shooter was holding “a couple” of hostages.

12.15 am: The site of the shooting is reported to be a few blocks away from Emanuel AME church, where nine black members of a church were killed by a white man during a June 2015 Bible study. Dylann Roof was sentenced to death in the case.

12.10 am: According to AP, Charleston Police spokesman Charles Francis told reporters the shooter was holding “a couple” of hostages. He did not immediately respond to follow-up telephone calls asking whether there were more than two.

12.05 am: The post said that one victim of the shooting was transported to the hospital, but there is no update on victim’s condition at this time. There are a small number of hostages inside the building with the shooter, while police crisis negotiators are on scene attempting to negotiate with the shooter.

12.00 am: The official page of City of Charleston, South Carolina Government posted an update saying the Charleston County Dispatch received a call on Thursday at 12.17 pm (local time) in reference to a shooting within the 400 block of King Street.

11.55 pm: The official Twitter account of Charleston Police department has asked people to avoid the 400 block of King street area. Area between Calhoun & Morris on the street has been blocked for motorists and pedestrian, the department said.

11.50 pm: Witnesses said that a man emerged from the kitchen of a restaurant and said, “There’s a new boss in town,” and ordered them to leave, AP reported.

11.45 pm: Authorities say that a disgruntled employee shot one person and is holding hostages in a restaurant in an area of Charleston that is popular with tourists. As per reports by The Associated Press, Mayor John Tecklenburg said the shooting was not an act of terrorism or racism.
