At least 19 people were killed and many injured on Saturday in Kabul after multiple explosions ripped through the burial services of a victim of violent clashes between Afghan police and protesters a day earlier, according to Reuters. The funeral was being held for the protester, who was the son of Senator Mohammad Alam Izdyar. He was killed during demonstrations while demanding better security in the country.

The latest development comes three days after a truck bombing in Kabul’s diplomatic quarter left 90 people dead and wounded hundreds. It was the deadliest attack in the city since 2001.

Amid increasing violence in the country, President Ashraf Ghani has issued a call for unity. “The country is under attack,” Ghani said in a message on Twitter. “We must be strong and united.”

According to Kabul’s Italian-run Emergency Hospital, 19 people had been reported killed and 16 wounded had been brought to the hospital. However, the interior ministry said there were six dead and 87 wounded.

Reacting to the incident, the Taliban, which has carried out bomb attacks in the past, denied having any role and instead blamed factional rivalries in the government’s own camp.
